I really need to keep track of where I get my book recommendations, because I would question the person or blog that suggested I read this book. Apparently it is part of a genre called New Adult Romance (NA Romance), which seems to be well known on Goodreads. Instead of Young Adult, we have New Adult now, which is about people in their 20s? I thought that was just romance or fiction, but apparently I know nothing, Jon Snow.

Lilly Bloom (seriously) is young and aspiring florist who lives in Boston. On the night of her father's death (not a spoiler) she seeks out some quiet time on an apartment building roof deck. Her father was very abusive to her mother, so she is not grieving her loss, but getting some closure. While on the roof deck, she meets Ryle (again, seriously, what is with the names), a fiery, attractive neurosurgeon. Their meet cute continues over several months. But then of course there is this homeless kid she used to date from back home who keeps popping up in her mind from time to time.

The book was…not great. The characters had no depth. For a book to tackle something as horrifying as spousal abuse, I really need to feel something for the characters. It was a tough book to read in certain places, and I can imagine some people who would not be able to finish because of some of the scenarios the book depicted.

I understand the author, Colleen Hoover, has quite a passionate following. Her writing was lovely, but it was the plot that suffered. Perhaps I should have known a little bit more about the plot before I started reading the book, but I thought it was just another meet cute love story with easy to fix drama. I was wrong. Also, I am over the love triangle concept. Every young adult book series these days has a love triangle, and I am over it.

Two duds in a row. I will soldier on and hopefully find a good book!
